Brainstorm for new Great5 rule-set

Do I really want to re-design this from scratch ?

Base Ideas

  • Action Points instead of actions ?
  • Stats redesign ? 3/6 stat, AoW system with direct stats ?
  • hitpoint system ? Expand on V&W, adding wound locations ?
  • Dice rolls, spike or bell curve, for what rolls?
  • Low bonuses to bell curve ala ikrpg
  • make lots of combat options viable, but simplify from d20, look to ikrpg/wmh/5e/aow
  • Do away with proficiencies ? What alternative, make gear optimal for different stats?
  • Allows me to redesign the defensive stats to a system I like better
  • I'll need to create a new base creature to use for testing.
  • Bonuses, do I want them to stack?
  • Monsters as templates, pre made generic samples, create advanced versions as characters.
  • AoW1's system of base abilities for everything, humans start with walk ?

Big 3

This means I'll have to make new traits to replace feats, I can take a look at other games to get some inspiration for this. I want to retain a good bit of what some of the feats in d20 does, and class abilities. But I can also grab things from AoW, and take a look at ikrpg, warmachine, 5e etc. This is actually going to be a lot of work, simply because of mass, and is the largest advantage to staying with d20.

  • Levels
    • No static level bonuses
    • Gain Stat/Trait
    • Stats will increase your numerical bonuses
    • Traits will increase your class progression
    • Both will let user customize character further from other same class
    • Replace levels with just buying upgrades through XP? (Want even split stat/trait)
    • What is class progression at this point, traits only?
    • What defines a class other than magic ?
    • What does a class start with ?
    • Specific trait selections ?
  • Skills
    • Simplistic
    • Few skills
    • Separate from class entirely
    • Make broad skills that are multi purpose
    • Use stats as the basis for each skill
    • A simple proficiency/knack system to give small bonuses
    • Progression should be increasing stats or acquire another knack
    • Inspiration: PoE, IK, 5E
  • Feats
    • Rename to Traits, because.
    • I still want a good bit of the same functionality of existing d20 feats and class abilities
    • But need to tweak all of these to new system
    • Going to have to look over what feats to build into base actions
    • Don't want feats like Dodge that gives +1 armor
    • Power Attack could be a base trait for all characters
    • Expertize should be fighting defensively
    • Further on insert more from: AoW, IK, WMH, 5E
    • Class specific traits based on magic type
    • Class specific traits based on play style? (Paladin themed traits only for Priest?)
    • Generic traits available for everyone
